Memories of Liverpool

I have a home outside Liverpool and my business partner lives in Poole in Dorset, so when I am in UK my business partner comes up North so that we can get together.
This has been our ritual for more than 10 years now. On one evening of his stay we would visit a small Chinese restaurant behind a shop front in China Town, Liverpool.
The food was always great but the matriarch, who ran it, was always very cool towards us. We could not understand this as we are both very friendly individuals, so were confused by her attitude and put it down to her character!
I always left my wife Gaynor back in France and John left his wife Caroline in Poole so we were bachelors for the few days we spent discussing business and getting together with business colleagues.
One week, when I was back in UK, John brought all his family up as he was on the way to Scotland to visit his parents and, of course, they wanted to visit the Chinese restaurant we had spoken so much about and wanted to meet the Dragon Lady that owned it.
Off we went to China Town and with trepidation entered the very basically furnished restaurant. The lady owner was there but her attitude changed completely when she saw us both with a woman and the children playing with us. She was transformed into the convivial host and could not do enough for us.
We concluded that she thought we were Gay and had an unreasonable attitude to this!
Since that day she has been very pleasant to us and our visits are more pleasurable.
Unfortunately my visits to the UK have decreased and we have been deterred from visiting China Town after having my car broken into and my belongings stolen. We have now found a modern Chinese restaurant, out of town, with a waterfall, a Karp pool in the reception area and beautiful decoration, however it lacks the authenticity of our old restaurant behind the old shop front , which lacked tablecloths and had worn net curtains over the window, but had the greatest Cantonese food in town!
