I originally decided to learn Golf to keep my sanity whilst semi-retiring to the South of France. How wrong I was!! This game can drive you to distraction with ones game being dependent on ones mood as well as ability. My first months on the course saw me throwing the club to the ground every time I hit the ground instead of the ball. Things have improved since then, as has my impatience and temper!!
I have been playing for about 2 years now and after intensive lessons from Mark and many sessions on the practice ground, Mark told me to just to get out there and play!!
The first lesson was that just because you might be a Practice Ground Pro it does not mean you can play on the course. Particularly at St Maxime it is almost impossible to find a piece of ground that is flat so every shot is at an angle or with the ball above or below the feet!! This certainly demands a different mode of play than the Practice Ground!
The back 9 at St Maxime is literally on the top of a mountain, with plenty of opportunities of going out of bounds for the uninitiated.
My game usually starts with a coffee with Mark, in the clubhouse, before he starts his morning Golf School and Lady, Mark’s dog, demands her morning biscuits that I always carry with me.
Some of the views on the back 9 are absolutely amazing with beautiful views of the Gulf of St Tropez.
Obviously, in the South of France, it is necessary, during the summer, to play early in the morning so playing around 8.30 a.m. is the best.
Winter playing is ideal as the weather is normally great for golf, if a little cold early in morning.
The Club House has undergone restoration during last winter and we now have a beautiful Pro shop and restaurant together with a new Locker Room.
New Golf Carts have also been purchased and they are now all electric with GPS.
All in all a great Golf Club with the ability to pay per game or take out a yearly membership.
