The Cantine Bambou used to be a Routier (Lorry Drivers’ Restaurant) and was always full and the food was good and cheap. It is situated on the road into Cogolin from the Geant Grand Casino roundabout at La Foux.
A couple of years ago it was converted into a Thai Restaurant complete with Concrete Elephants outside and we went in and were impressed by the authenticity of the food and the price but not really the ambiance.
Yesterday we were invited there by guests who were staying with us and I have to say it was very busy, even at lunch time. A new protected covered area has been constructed and a fence put up around the property to stop the main road from being seen.
In the kitchen I could see a couple of Thai chefs working. The clients all appeared to be locals and that is always a good sign!
I started with hot Thai soup with prawns with lemon grass and coriander in it. It was delicious and my wife had nems (chop sui rolls). For our main courses one guest had vegetables in Green Curry with boiled rice, and I had Prawn fried rice which was very well cooked and presented.
The prices of the main courses were about €14 which is not bad in this area, the service was excellent as was the company and we sat there for nearly two hours without realizing where the time had gone.
A recommended restaurant for an oriental meal at a reasonable price.
