Visitors
Just had a visit from my daughter and her friend Ruth, with two of my grandchildren and her friends two kids.
My daughter is more of a permenant fixture down here as she visits 3 or 4 times per year and stays in our guest house which is about 5 minutes from our home. My Grandchildren call it " our French house"!!
It is such a pleasure to see the kids playing in the pool, which takes much upkeep all year, but seeing them makes it all totally worthwhile!
It has been great to see them progress, over the years, from fear of the water to all swimming like fishes. This, of course includes my other two Grandchildren who are a little older.

Return of the Family
After a week without my wife, who I have missed dearly whilst she has been in Maderia, I will be collecting her from Nice airport early this evening. My in laws are also coming back today from a month in UK so they need collecting from Tulon airport ( the other direction ). Looks like I am going to have a busy day!!
Whilst in UK my mother in law was fitted with a hearing aid in each ear and I had the first telephone conversation with her EVER last night! What a difference this will make to our lives as she has always nodded when we discuss things with her but we are never sure if she has understood!

Andrew and Tam

One thing I love about Sainte Maxime during the summer is a chance to see my kids playing basketball. Last night there was an open basketball session down in the local gym (completely free I may add) and so I spent a great evening watching the ‘ballers’ in action.
Alongside Andrew in the photo is Tamzin a childhood friend. Both are in the Great Britain -20’s squad and both will be off to new adventures this September. Andrew to play in the British basketball league for the newly formed BBL Essex Pirates but will also be studying for his Sport and Science degree, Tamzin is off to play for Kent State University in America and will be studying Sports management and business.
Even if they don’t see each other from one year to the next, when they do meet up it’s like they had never been apart.

Here they come!! By Mr L

If you think you have no friends or that your family don’t visit you often enough, then move to the South of France and I guarantee that, during the summer, you will be inundated with self invited guests who really miss seeing you!!
This sounds great but it has its problems:
Where do they stay? In my case I could not bear the thought of having people, no matter how much I love them, living in my home so my solution was to have a separate house about 3km from my home. This gives me the space I need and I can keep my sanity. I know this is not realistic but it is great if you can find them their own space. Obviously a B&B is probably more realistic and these can be had for about €70 per night.
Eating out is expensive in the area but there are many restaurants with a bias towards pasta and pizza where a cheap meal can be had. Even in the more up market restaurants if you stick to the “ Formule” they are often at around €20 and comprises 3 courses.
For transport all the airports have car rentals but beware! Shop around on the internet, don’t be talked into upgrades or extra insurance. Above all when you return the vehicle INSIST on checking the car for damage and get the inspection signed for by the rental company. This is your only protection against being charged for damage you have not done. Also fill the tank before returning car and get this signed off also.
The visitors go on right through the season and when September arrives and the last guest has left a sigh of relief goes up from all the English residents of the South of France. The visitors have left, the roads are clear, the beaches almost empty and the dog is allowed on again. This is the best time here, the weather is still good and we can enjoy lunch on the beach, enjoy the sunshine and my wife doesn’t need to clean the guest house.
This is the time when we can visit Italy, spend time in Nice or Cannes and get ready for a peaceful autumn.
